About P-Traps and How They Work
P-traps are primarily designed to be installed underneath the sink connecting the drainpipe. The P-traps also are made to ensure that sewer gases don't enter the home. Every faucet is equipped with a drain, which dumps into a sewer line. P-traps prevent gases from escaping the pipe so they won't enter the home thru sink drains. P-traps utilize a curved shape to trap water in the pipe. This water rests in the lower section of the pipe, creating a barrier that sewer gases cannot permeate. Each time water is run, the resting water is flushed down the pipe and new water replaces it. NOTE: Bathroom P-traps have a 1-1/4" diameter whereas the kitchen P-traps feature a 1-1/2" diameter.
